ALL ACCESS EKY

Through a combination of advocacy, community-organizing, education, and storytelling, All Access EKY is addressing the root cause of unplanned pregnancy in Southeastern Kentucky. Studies have shown that when young people have correct information and access to birth control and reproductive healthcare, as well as the opportunity to make their own decisions about their future, reductions in unplanned pregnancy are sure to follow.

All Access EKY serves young people in the following Southeastern Kentucky counties: Floyd, Harlan, Knott, Lee, Leslie, Letcher, Owsley, Perry, Pike, and Wolfe.

All Access EKY is an initiative of KHJN, Appalshop, and Power to Decide, that works within ten Southeastern Kentucky counties to build support for policies, programs, and services that ensure young people have access to the full range of contraceptive methods.

                                                                                          Appalshop
Appalshop is in its fifth decade using cultural organizing and place-based media, arts and education to advance social justice, environmental sustainability and economic equity. Located in the Whitesburg, KY, Appalshop’s mission is to tell stories challenging stereotypes with Appalachian visions and voices, to support community efforts to achieve justice and equity, to promote cultural diversity, pluralism, and human rights and to participate in regional, national and global movements toward these ends.

AMI, the Appalachian Media Institute, provides youth with an avenue to explore and develop positive attachments to their communities, cultures, and region as well as developing skills that prepare young people to be successful in school, higher education and the workforce. AMI partners with AAEKY to highlight rural voices to inform national audiences of the unique challenges facing Appalachian youth and their communities.

                                                                                        Power to Decide
Power to Decide works to ensure that all young people- no matter who they are, where they live, or what their economic status might be- have the power to decide if, when, and under what circumstances to get pregnant. They do this by increasing information, access, and opportunity.
          Power to Decide hopes to:
          1) Reduce teen pregnancy rates by 50% by 2026
          2) Reduce unplanned pregnancy rates among people age 18-29 by 25% by 2026
          3) Reduce racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in teen and unplanned pregnancy rates by 50% by 2026

Power to Decide provides trusted, high-quality, accurate information-backed by research- on sexual health and contraceptive methods so young people can make informed decisions. Their strategies-and their corresponding activities-are designed to address the complex factors that lead to unplanned pregnancy through policy, research, capacity building, convening, and strategic communications.

By building the power to decide, their work creates opportunities for young people to get informed, take control, and advocate for themselves- and to protect the amazing life opportunities that lie ahead.

                                                                                   Advisory Board
A key component of this work is convening a committee comprised of individuals from various sectors- health care, education, social services, policymakers, and other leaders- that represent the Appalachian Kentucky community. The role of the committee is to guide the community assessment, identify key priority areas, develop an action plan, monitor implementation of the action plan, and evaluate project initiatives.
